The Unique Speech Patterns of Liars by Dustin Shaw
The polygraph and lie detection have long been a source of fascination for many of us. How we imagine a life wherein no one can lie to us. But do you know that analyzing and learning about the peculiar speech patterns of liars can lead you closer to becoming a human lie detector machine?
In this article, let us take a look at the various speech patterns that are usually exhibited by liars. Take note that these speech patterns must not be taken in black and white and must not be viewed as a clear-cut guide to weed out the truthful ones from the liars. It does not work that way. Speech patterns vary because of the differences in our personalities. These are just guides, and they must be used accordingly. Use your intuition. Use the baseline speech pattern you have observed in that particular person during instances when he has no incentive to tell a lie. Use other nonverbal lying clues as well.
1. The person uses "never" to deny something instead of using a basic no.
2. The person uses the word "actually" to elaborate on something instead of giving a simple denial or an agreement.
3. When a person answers a question by repeating it as if he were reassuring himself, then the chances that he is not being truthful is very high.
For example:
Question: Do you have enough money to cover this?
Answer: Yes, I have enough money to cover this.
A more truthful answer: a simple yes or no
4. The use of contractions makes a sentence more truthful and more spontaneous. "No, I couldn't" is more truthful than "No, I could not."
5. Talkativeness is normally a sign of lying. So is the act of talking too fast or mumbling. A person who feels uncomfortable with the presence of pauses and awkward silences are more likely to be holding back something. Liars tend to include more details in the conversion in an attempt to convince you.
6. When a person obviously tries to inject sarcasm or humor in the conversation, it may be a deliberate attempt to fool you or to deflect the topic of the conversion.
It is helpful to understand how the process of lying and its biometric patterns work. That knowledge can be handy not just in workplace or domestic situations but also in the day to day life. Handbooks like DetectDeceit can elucidate and help.
